NEWS OF THE WEEK 08/11/20
BIDEN WINS THE U.S ELECTION
After a very long week, Biden has been projected to win the 2020 Presidential Election. Beating his Republican opponent Donald Trump, Biden will be inaugurated as the 46thPresident in January 2021, with his Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is the first female Vice President in American history. In the election, Biden managed to ‘flip’ Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which had previously been Republican states. Biden is currently leading in Georgia and Arizona while Trump is ahead in Alaska and North Carolina.
TRUMP MAKES ALLEGATIONS OF VOTER FRAUD
Since the ballot counting began, Trump has been using several platforms to make allegations of voter fraud, while falsely claiming that he is the legitimate winner. Claiming corruption, the Republican Party filed an emergency request at the US Supreme Court to separate mail-in ballots from the rest, but this request has already been declined twice. Political experts are suggesting that any inquiry will not land in favour of Trump and the public decision will stand.
On Wednesday, MPs debated the lockdown proposed by the Prime Minister last Saturday and ultimately voted in favour of it: 516-38. On Thursday, the nationwide lockdown was implemented across England, preventing non-essential shops from opening and restricting indoor household-mixing.
It was also announced this week that the furlough scheme will be extended until March, however this does not necessarily suggest that the lockdown will be continued after 2ndDecember.
THE REST OF THE UK
The rules for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are different from England.
The firebreak in Wales is due to expire on Monday, with the one in Northern Ireland ending on Friday. Cases in Wales this week have dropped, however, we cannot yet confidently say that cases are decreasing for definite. The travel restriction for Wales will also be lifted on Monday.
Scotland have now enforced their 5-tier system. This comes amid fears of a new mink Coronavirus strain and an increase of local cases across Scotland.
FRENCH BULLDOG WINS ELECTION
Unbelievably, a French Bulldog named Wilbur Beast has won the mayoral election in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. This is not the first time this has happened since Rabbit Hash has been electing dogs as their mayor since the 1990s. However, not all dogs are eligible to run: only dogs that can chase a rabbit from their home to Rabbit Hash town centre are eligible.
